INDIA WAS WORLD TOP ECONOMY TILL 17TH CENTURY

BUT WHY IS INDIA SO POOR TODAY ?

BRITISH MILKING OF WEALTH ... £ 222 BILLION POUNDS in its 200+ years of direct and indirect rule.

The “drain of wealth” from India to Britain during the two centuries of colonial rule was very real, very substantial and there are strong reasons to believe that India may have looked significantly different (and far better) economically and socially had it not been for the two centuries of British rule.

The beginning of this period can probably be traced back to the Battle of Plasssey. As Prof. Richards writes in the introduction to his paper “Imperial Finance Under the East India Company 1762-1859”, “On June 23,1757, Robert Clive, commanding a small force of East India Company professional troops, defeated and killed Siraju-ud-daula, the ruling Nawab of Bengal, on the battlefield of Plassey. The battle marked a significant turning point in world history, for it permitted the English East India Company to gain control over the rich resources of the Mughal successor state in northeastern Bengal and Bihar.

This was the starting point for a century-long process of British conquest and dominion over the entire Indian subcontinent and beyond.”

In his research on the subject, Prof Maddison mentions the burden imposed by the administrative machinery of the State: “…British salaries were high: the Viceroy received £25,000 a year, and governors £10,000…From 1757 to 1919, India also had to meet administrative expenses in London, first of the East India Company, and then of the India Office, as well as other minor but irritatingly extraneous charges. The cost of British staff was raised by long home leave in the UK, early retirement and lavish amenities in the form of subsidized housing, utilities, rest houses, etc.”

Prof. Richards mentions that although the Company “raised their revenue demands in each territory … to the highest assessments made by previous Indian regimes” they were still insufficient to “meet the combined administrative, military and commercial expenses of the Company”

Vijayanagara empire! Ruled South India for 310 Years

At the peak of Akbar's power after Islamic invasions, guess who held up Hindu resistance and protected Sanatana Dharma? It was the Vijayanagara empire!

But our history books rarely teach us about the mighty empire that ruled south India for 310 years continuously, with Sangama, Saluva, Tuluva and Aravidu dynasties contributing to 29 kings during this period. In contrast, Mughals who were there for 331 years, had 22 kings, are all over history books.

Rastra Rishi Nanaji Deshmukh

Rajesh Rao's photo.

Chandikadas Amritrao Deshmukh also known as Nanaji Deshmukh (11 October 1916 – 27 February 2010) was a social activist from India. He worked in the fields of education, health, and rural self-reliance, and has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushanby the Government of India. He was a leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and also a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Early childhood

Deshmukh was born in Deshastha Brahmin family on 11 October 1916 in Kadoli, a small town in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra to Amritrao Deshmukh and Rajabai Amritrao Deshmukh. Deshmukh's career was full of strife and struggle. He lost his parents at an early age and was brought up by his maternal uncle.

His family had little money to pay for his tuition fees and books, but his keen desire to learn encouraged him to work as a vendor and sell vegetables to raise money to fund his education. He lived in temples and received a higher education at the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani before becoming an RSS activist in the nineteen thirties.

Though born in Maharashtra, the fields of his activities were Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Seeing his devotion, the then RSS Sarsanghchalak M. S. Golwalkar sent him to Gorakhpur (U.P) as "pracharak". He rose to be the Saha Prant Pracharak of the whole of Uttar Pradesh (which has now become 8 prant of RSS).

RSS Volunteer

Deshmukh became inspired by Lokamanya Tilak and his nationalist ideology, as well as showing an acquired interest in social service and activities. His family was in close contact with Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar who was a regular visitor to Deshmukh's family. He could discern potential in Nanaji and encouraged him to attend RSS shakhas.

In 1940, after Hedgewar's death, many youngsters inspired by him joined the R.S.S. in Maharashtra. Deshmukh was among those enthused youths who joined the RSS devoting their whole life in service to the nation. He was sent to Uttar Pradesh as a Pracharak. At Agra, he met Deen Dayal Upadhyaya for the first time. Later, Deshmukh went toGorakhpur as a pracharak where he took great pains to introduce Sangh ideology in the eastern UP. It was not an easy task at that time as the Sangh had no funds to meet even day-today expenses. He had to stay in a Dharmashala but had to keep on changing Dharmashalas as no one was allowed to stay there for more than three days consecutively. Ultimately, he was given shelter by Baba Raghavdas on the condition that he would also cook meals for him.

Within three years, his hard work bore fruits and almost 250 Sangh Shakhas commenced in and around Gorakhpur. Nanaji always laid great emphasis on education. He established Bharat's first Saraswati Shishu Mandir at Gorakhpur in 1950.[1][2]

When in 1947, the RSS decided to launch two journals Rashtradharma, Panchjanya and a newspaper called Swadesh,Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was assigned the responsibility of the editor and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya was made the Margdharshak with Nanaji as the managing director. It was a challenging task as the organisation was hard up for money to bring out the publications, yet it did never dampen their spirits and these publications gained popularity and recognition because of their strong nationalistic content.

Mahatma Gandhi's assassination led to imposition of ban on the RSS and publication work came to a grinding halt. A different strategy was adopted keeping the ban in mind and Nanaji was the brain behind underground publication work by the RSS those days.
Political life

When the ban was lifted and it was decided to have a political organisation, Bharatiya Jana Sangh came into being. Deshmukh was asked by Shri Guruji to take charge of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in Uttar Pradesh as general secretary. Deshmukh had worked as RSS pracharak in Uttar Pradesh and his groundwork proved of a great help in organising BJS at the grass roots. By 1957 BJS had established its units at each and every district in Uttar Pradesh and credit for this goes to the Nanaji who had extensively travelled all over the state.Soon, BJS became a force to reckon with in Uttar Pradesh. In 1967 BJS became the part of United Legislature Party and joined the Government headed by Chaudhary Charan Singh. Deshmukh played a crucial role in evolving the alliance as he enjoyed good relations with Charan Singh and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia. He was successful in bringing leaders of different political backgrounds on one platform to give Uttar Pradesh its first non-Congress government.

A political giant, like Chandra Bhanu Gupta, former UP chief minister had to face one of the biggest challenges of his political career when Deshmukh outwitted him not once but thrice. On one occasion, he planned a strategy to defeat the Congress nominee and Gupta's favourite in Rajya Sabha. When Gupta himself contested elections from Lucknow in 1957, Nanaji crafted an alliance with socialist groups and helped Babu Triloki Singh in registering an impressive win over Gupta. Gupta faced another embarrassment when he was again defeated at Maudaha in Uttar Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh, BJS gained strength from Upadhyaya's vision, Atal Vajpai's oratory skills and Deshmukh's organizational work and it emerged as an important player in the state politics. Deshmukh always shared good relations not only with his party colleagues but also with his opponents. Gupta, who suffered many defeats at the hands of Deshmukh, yet continued to have great respect for him and called him 'Nana Phadanvis '. His relations with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia changed the course of Indian politics. Once he invited Lohia in BJS karaykarta sammelan where he met Upadhyaya for the first time and this association brought the BJS closer to Socialist parties in exposing the Congress and its misrule.

Desmukh actively participated in Bhoodan Movement started by Vinoba Bhave.[1] By spending two months with Vinoba, he was inspired by the success and appeal of the movement.

The months that followed the judgment of Justice Jagmohan Lal Sinha of the Allahabad High Court, setting aside the election of Indira Gandhi in June 1974, were traumatic. An anti-Indira agitation, led by Jai Prakash Narayan, was gathering momentum.

In the latter half of the year a massive procession, led by Narayan was taken out in Patna. As the procession wended its way through the roads of the state capital, the police made a lathi charge and, it is said, the Sarvodaya leader was the target. The final assault came when Narayan's supporters were escorting him to safety. One of the supporters sprang to his leader's protection, covered him and took all the lathi blows on himself. That man was Deshmukh. One of his arms was fractured in this daring effort.

Later, Narayan himself and Morarji Desai, who became the Prime Minister heading the Janata Party Government, publicly praised the courage shown by Deshmukh and, as a reward, offered him the Cabinet portfolio of Industry, but Deshmukh spurned the overture. Deshmukh had won in the 1977 election held after revocation of the Emergency with a comfortable margin from Balrampur Lok Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh.[1]

In 1980, when he turned 60, he opted not only from the electoral fray but also politics. He later devoted himself completely to social and constructive work, lived in ashrams and never projected himself.
When Narayan gave the call for "Total Revolution" Deshmukh responded by giving total support to this movement.[1] When the Janata Party was formed, Deshmukh was one of its main architects. Janata Party stormed into power by sweeping off the Congress.

He was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the NDA Government in the year 1999 in recognition of his services to the nation.

Social work

After retirement from active politics Deshmukh then served Deendayal Research Institute that he himself had established way back in 1969.[1] He wanted Deendayal Research Institute to be devoted to strengthening the movement for constructive work in Bharat.

He did pioneering work towards the anti-poverty and minimum needs programme. Other areas of his work were agriculture and cottage industry, rural health and rural education. Deshmukh assumed chairmanship of the institute after relinquishing politics and devoted all his time to building up the institute. He was also instrumental in carrying out social restructuring programme in over 500 villages of both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh states of India.[1] He also published the journal "Manthan" (introspection) which was edited by K.R. Malkani for many years.

Deshmukh did a lot of social work in Gonda (U.P.) and Beed (Maharashtra). The motto of his project was: “Har hath ko denge kaam, har khet ko denge paanee”.

He finally settled down at the picturesque Chitrakoot, a holy place on the borders of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. It was in 1969 that Deshmukh visited Chitrakoot for the first time. He was moved to see the pathetic condition of the society in the karmabhoomi of Ram, the place where Ram spent 12 out of the 14 years in exile. He sat by the holy River Mandakini, and resolved to change the face of Chitrakoot during his lifetime. While in exile, Ram started working for the upliftment of the downtrodden here. With this important historical and inspiring background, Deshmukh made Chitrakoot the centre of his social work.

He chose to serve the poorest among the poor. He used to remark jokingly that he admired Vanavasi Ram more than Raja Ram and so would like to spend the rest of his life in Chitrakoot among the vanavasis and most backward sections of the society.

He also established Chitarkoot Gramoday Vishwavidyalaya in Chitrakoot, India's first rural University, and served as its Chancellor.[1] Nanaji implemented the philosophy of integral humanism to improve the living standards of more than 150 villages of bundelkhand.

Deendayal Research Institute

Deendayal Research Institute (DRI) was founded in 1972 by Deshmukh to validate the philosophy of Integral Humanism propounded by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya (1916–1968). Integral Humanism gave a vision for Bharat that, with an approach to man and his relationship to society that is integral and complementary, could transform Bharat into a self-reliant and compassionate example for the world to follow.

Deshmukh developed a model for the development of rural areas on the basis of Integral Humanism. After initial experiments in Gonda (U.P.) and Beed (Maharashtra), Nanaji finally fine-tuned an integrated program for the development of rural areas that covers health, hygiene, education, agriculture, income generation, conservation of resources, and social conscience, that is both sustainable and replicable. The basis of the project is 'Total transformation through total development with people's initiative and participation'.

The project, called the Chitrakoot Project or the 'Campaign for Self-Reliance', was launched on 26 January 2005 in 80 villages around the Chitrakoot area in the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The aim was to achieve self-reliance for these villages by 2005. When complete in 2010, the project hopes to make the 500 surrounding villages self-reliant and serve as a sustainable and replicable model for the Bharat and the world.

DRI has association with the following important institutions among others.
The Wadia Group, Apeejay Education Society (AES), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology (MPCST), India Development Coalition of America (IDCA), Department of Elementary Education (DEE), The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Ayurveda Yoga & Naturopathy Unani Siddha and Homoeopathy(AYUSH) and Sewa International (SI)

Appreciation and recognition

He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1999. India's former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam praised Deshmukh for his "single-minded devotion to the uplift of the people".

Death

Deshmukh died on 27 February 2010 in the premises of Chitrakoot Gramoday Vishwavidyalaya that he established. He was unwell for some time due to age-related ailments and had refused to be taken to Delhi for treatment. He has willed that his body be donated to Dadhichi Dehdaan Sanstha of New Delhi which was accepted, and his body was sent toAll India Institute of Medical Sciences for medical research. His body was sent by road up to Satna, Madhya Pradesh, and hundreds of people and local residents accompanied this last procession to Satna. From Satna, his body was carried by a chartered plane to New Delhi. In New Delhi, his body was kept for few hours at Keshav Sadan (Delhi headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh), and after that the body was donated to AIIMS with the help of Dadhichi Dehdan Sanstha

Kohinoor Diamond

The Kohinor Diamond is a cursed one , bringing misfortune to the owner.

The Kohinoor Diamond, meaning Mountain of Light in Persian, is now with the British, and is embedded in the Royal Crown.

Kohinoor,

Kohinoor Diamond.jpg
The Kohinoor Diamond.
Was mined in Kolluru Mines, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh,India.

It was 793  when it was uncut.

It is now a 105.6 metric carats diamond, weighing 21.6 grammes .

Exact value of the stone is not known, but in the 1500s it was considered that the diamond’s value corresponds to about half of the world’s total production costs in one day. Of course, with a diamond so unique, it is hard to put a monetary value attached to it.
The fact that it never changed hands through a documented sale doesn’t help our evaluation. The Kohinoor was always stolen, bartered or gifted and never sold.
As comparison the most expensive documented sale of a diamond occurred around 60 years ago, when the Graff pink was sold in Hong Kong for $46 million.
The Graff pink weighs “only” 24,78 carats compared to the 106 carats that the Koh-i-noor weighs though.
Even if the value of the Kohinoor diamond is not known, it is part of the Crown Jewels, and the whole value of the Crown Jewels is between $10 and $12 billion.
Kohinoor was the Eye of  Bhadrakali in Warangal,Andhra Pradesh.

It was donated by the Kakatiya Kings.

In 1323,Ghiyath al-dhin Thughlak  defeatedthe Kakatiyas and true to Islamic style vandalised the Temple and took away the Kohinoor.

He was late killed by his son.
The Kohinoor changed many hands before it landed with the Maharaja Of Punjab, Maharaja Ranjith Singh.
He donated the Kohinoor to Puri Jagannath Temple and died.
The British refused to hand over the diamond to the Temple.
In 1850, the Kohinoor was stolen and was delivered to the British.

Fearing the Curse, the present Queen Elizabeth avoids wearing the Kohinoor and wears the Imperial State Crown.

The diamond remained with Khilji dynasty, and later passed on to the succeeding dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate, until it came into the possession of Babur, a Turco-Mongol war lord, who invaded India and established the Mughal Empire in 1526. He called the stone ‘the Diamond of Bābur’ at the time, although it had been called by other names before it came into his possession. Both Babur and his son and successor, Humayun mention in their memoirs the origins of ‘the Diamond of Bābur’.
A 1757 miniature of Ahmad Shāh Durrānī, the Emir of Afghanistan, in which the Koh-i-Noor diamond is seen hanging on the front of hiscrown, above his forehead.
The diamond remained locked in the Mughal treasury until it was taken out by Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor. Shah Jahan, famous for building the Taj Mahal in Agra, had the stone placed into his ornate Peacock Throne. His son, Aurangazeb, imprisoned his ailing father at nearby Agra Fort. While in the possession of Aurangazeb, it was cut by Hortenso Borgia, a Venetian lapidary, who was so clumsy that he reduced the weight of the stone to 186 carats.[12] Legend has it that he had the Koh-i-Noor positioned near a window so that Shāh Jahān could see the Tāj Mahal only by looking at its reflection in the stone. Following the invasion of Nadir Shah, the ruler of Afsharid Persia in 1739 and the sacking of Agra and Delhi. Along with the Peacock Throne, he also carried off the Koh-i-Noor to Persia in 1739. It was allegedly Nādir Shāh who exclaimed Koh-i-Noor! when he finally managed to obtain the famous stone,[4] and this is how the stone gained its present name. There is no reference to this name before 1739.
The valuation of the Koh-i-Noor is given in the legend that one of Nader Shah’s consorts supposedly said, “If a strong man should take five stones, and throw one north, one south, one east, and one west, and the last straight up into the air, and the space between filled with gold and gems, that would equal the value of the Koh-i-Noor.”
After the assassination of Nādir Shāh in 1747, the stone came into the hands of his general, Ahmad Shāh Durrānī, who later became the Emir of Afghanistan. In 1830, Shujāh Shāh Durrānī, the deposed Emir of Afghanistan and a descendant of Ahmad Shah Durrani, managed to flee with the diamond. He went to Lahore where the Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh forced him to surrender the stone and took its possession.’
Britain is still hand over the Kohinoor Diamond to india, despite repeated demands.

RSS Largest volunteer organization of the world

RSS or Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh is often painted with a broad brush by the media,so called secular political parties and anti Hindu groups as a right-wing organization. It overlooks the humanitarian efforts undertaken by RSS all over India. Even before so called Christian Missionary Saints ,Western World,United Nations and its various agencies became active in developing countries and the whole concept of NGOs caught up, RSS was the leading organization in the area of social service and grassroots nation building effort.

Notwithstanding the way mainstream media portrays RSS, it is the largest volunteer organization of the world known for its selfless service. It also motivates its volunteer to work in diverse areas. From time to time volunteers start their own organizations in order to serve the society, one such organization is Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram: an RSS product changing lives of tribals (creating patriotism and self reliability) much before communists started a violent movement in the name of Mao and missionaries started to convert tribal in the name of service(also in North East India evangelical churches supporting anti national terrorist outfits ). Unlike Maoists who trained them for warfare against the nation, VKA imparted them education because of a firm belief in the potential of education for development. Here is a brief glance at the work that Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram does:

1)The Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram was founded in 1952 by Balasaheb Deshpande.
2)VKA is assisted by RSS volunteers in every work that it undertakes for tribal upliftment.
3)VKA ashmram believes in one thing “Keep working in silence”.
4)VKA is working forTribal Development: Education, Health and Economic development, Promotion of tribal culture and tradition, and protection of Tribal Rights on water, forests and land (jal, jungle and jameen).
5)VKA is working in more than 375 tribal districts (having a tribal population of more than 25K).
6)7000 tribal students are staying in hostel facilities built by VKA.
7)More than 100000 students are being trained in schools run by VKA.
8)Students after completing their education join prestigious services like Army, Civil services, educational activity, government employees, physicians and technologists.
9)More than 3000 VKA health workers reach more than 30000 villages with various medical facilities.
10)Every year more than 1.2 million patients are treated in tribal dispensaries/ hospitals by VKA.
11)Tribals are trained by VKA for their economic development. Various training program undertaken by VKA are sewing, handlooms and handicrafts.
12)VKA volunteers guide tribals to adopt better farming techniques.
13)Education program and awareness camps are also conducted for aged people so that they can protect themselves from exploitation.
14)VKA volunteers help to build check dams in order to irrigate tribal areas.
15)In Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, Kalyan Ashram has taken up the Shiv Ganga project in 175 villages by which check/stop dams, contours and trenches have been constructed. As a result the water table in these villages has risen by 15 feet (4-5 meters). For more details see States-Madhya Pradesh.

16)In Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka more than one thousand self help groups have been activated by Kalyan Ashram workers. Through these groups lakhs of people are benefiting.
17)Tribal cultural meets are organized at block/district/state and national level to promote their culture and tradition.
18)In 2005, North East Youth Cultural meet was organized in which around 5000 young boys and girls participated and celebrated their culture.
19)Cultural events like like `Kolatam’, cake Bhajana’ and `Dhimsa’ dance organized by VKA every year in order to protect tribal cultural.
20)Archery competition conducted by VKA for tribal brotherhood.
21)Limba Ram who represented India in Olympic Games is a product of VKA.
22)Kavita Raut, winner of commonwealth and Asian games athlete is also a product of VKA.

Mother Teresa: Where Are Her Millions? 1

-by Walter Wuellenweber

The Angel of the poor died some years ago. Donations still flow in to her Missionaries of Charity like to no other cause. But the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize vowed to live in poverty. What then, happened to so much money?

If there is a heaven, then she is surely there: Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu from Skopje in Macedonia, better known as Mother Teresa. She came to Calcutta on the 6th of Januray 1929 as an 18 year old sister of the Order of Loreto. 68 years later luminaries from all over the world assembled in Calcutta in order to honour her with a state funeral. In these 68 years she had founded the most successful order in the history of the Catholic church, received the Nobel Peace Prize and became the most famous Catholic of our time.

Are doubts permitted, regarding this “monument”?In Calcutta, one meets many doubters.

For example, Samity, a man of around 30 with no teeth, who lives in the slums. He is one of the “poorest of the poor” to whom Mother Teresa was supposed to have dedicated her life. With a plastic bag in hand, he stands in a kilometre long queue in Calcutta’s Park Street. The poor wait patiently, until the helpers shovel some rice and lentils into their bags. But Samity does not get his grub from Mother Teresa’s institution, but instead from the Assembly of God, an American charity, that serves 18000 meals here daily.
“Mother Teresa?”says Samity, “We have not received anything from her here. Ask in the slums — who has received anything from the sisters here — you will find hardly anybody.”
Pannalal Manik also has doubts. “I don’t understand why you educated people in the West have made this woman into such a goddess!” Manik was born some 56 years ago in the Rambagan slum, which at about 300 years of age, is Calcutta’s oldest. What Manik has achieved, can well be called a “miracle”. He has built 16 apartment buildings in the midst of the slum — living space for 4000 people. Money for the building materials — equivalent to DM 10000 per apartment building — was begged for by Manik from the Ramakrishna Mission [a Indian/Hindu charity], the largest assistance-organisation in India. The slum-dwellers built the buildings themselves. It has become a model for the whole of India. But what about Mother Teresa? “I went to her place 3 times,” said Manik. “She did not even listen to what I had to say. Everyone on earth knows that the sisters have a lot of money. But no one knows what they do with it!”

In Calcutta there are about 200 charitable organisations helping the poor. Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity are not amongst the biggest helpers: that contradicts the image of the organisation. The name “Mother Teresa” was and is tied to the city of Calcutta. All over the world admirers and supporters of the Nobel Prize winner believe that it must be there that her organisation is particularly active in the fight against poverty. “All lies,” says Aroup Chatterjee ( truthweb@writeme.com . The doctor who lives in London was born and brought up in Calcutta. Chatterjee who has been working for years on a book on the myth of Mother Teresa, speaks to the poor in the slums of Calcutta, or combs through the speeches of the Nobel Prize winner. “No matter where I search, I only find lies. For example the lies about schools. Mother T has often stated that she runs a school in Calcutta for more than 5000 children. 5000 children! — that would have to be a huge school, one of the biggest in all of India. But where is this school? I have never found it, nor do I know anybody who has seen it!” says Chatterjee.

Compared to other charitable organisations in Calcutta, the nuns with the 3 blue stripes are ahead in two respects: they are world famous, and, they have the most money. But how much exactly, has always been a closely guarded secret of the organisation. Indian law requires charitable organisations to publish their accounts. Mother Teresa’s organisation ignores this prescription! It is not known if the Finance Ministry in Delhi who would be responsible for charities’ accounts, have the actual figures. Upon STERN’s inquiry, the Ministry informed us that this particular query was listed as “classified information”.

The organisation has 6 branches in Germany. Here too financial matters are a strict secret. “It’s nobody’s business how much money we have, I mean to say how little we have,” says Sr Pauline, head of the German operations. Maria Tingelhoff had had handled the organisation’s book-keeping on a voluntary basis until 1981. “We did see 3 million a year,” she remembers. But Mother Teresa never quite trusted the worldly helpers completely. So the sisters took over the financial management themselves in 1981. “Of course I don’t know how much money went in, in the years after that, but it must be many multiples of 3 million,” estimates Mrs Tingelhoff. “Mother was always very pleased with the Germans.”

Perhaps the most lucrative branch of the organisation is the “Holy Ghost” House in New York’s Bronx. Susan Shields served the order there for a total of nine and a half years as Sister Virgin. “We spent a large part of each day writing thank you letters and processing cheques,” she says. “Every night around 25 sisters had to spend many hours preparing receipts for donations. It was a conveyor belt process: some sisters typed, others made lists of the amounts, stuffed letters into envelopes, or sorted the cheques. Values were between $5 and $100.000. Donors often dropped their envelopes filled with money at the door. Before Christmas the flow of donations was often totally out of control. The postman brought sackfuls of letters — cheques for $50000 were no rarity.” Sister Virgin remembers that one year there was about $50 million in a New York bank account. $50 million in one year! — in a predominantly non-Catholic country. How much then, were they collecting in Europe or the world? It is estimated that worldwide they collected at least $100 million per year — and that has been going on for many many years.

Buttons Invented In India

Buttons are a major part of our clothing even today. Buttons were invented in India and various historical evidences and excavations prove that buttons were used by the people belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization.

Shells were given various shapes and were pierced into a hole. Earlier they were used more as an embellishment but were gradually used to fasten clothes.

Swami Lakshmanananda

Swami Lakshmanananda exemplifies‘Manav sewa is madhav sewa’ (Service to humanity is service to God)

On August 23 — the day on which Janmashtami fell in 2008 — the assailants pumped several bullets into the frail body of the 84-year-old Hindu monk Vedanta Keshari Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati Swamiji and four of his followers. There is enough evidence to suggest that Maoist did this at the behest of Christian Evangelicals. The murder was committed during a spiritual discourse.

It is pertinent to mention that six months after the brutal killing of the Swami and four of his followers, Sabyasachi Panda owned up responsibility for the gruesome murder in an interaction with three Left-leaning journalists Sampad Mahapatra, Prafulla Das and Apurba Mohanty in a deep forest hinterland. All the three journalists were deposed before the Naidu Commission. Panda is also on record having said that most Maoist cadre in Odisha are Christians. This points to a deeper Missionary-Maoist nexus in Swami Lakshmanananda murder.

The Maoists might have pulled the trigger on the frail body of the 84-year-old Sanyasi, but several intelligence inputs suggest that the heinous act was committed at the behest of unnamed Christian Missionaries. Intelligence sources further suggest that a US-based Pentecostal Church funded Maoists to execute the attack on the revered Hindu monk. At this time there is no independent verification of these Intelligence inputs and no Christian Missionary has been charged with conspiring to murder the Hindu monk.

Before the murderous attack, there were nine such attacks on Lakshmanananda. It was common knowledge that every attack had a Missionary hand behind it. In December 2007, Lakshmanananda sustained serious injuries in a violent attack at Daringbadi, the centre of missionary activities in Kandhamal. Following the attack, several complaints were registered to enhance the Swami’s security, but they all fell on deaf ears of Naveen Patnaik Government.

On August 13, 2008, a threatening letter targeting Swami Lakshmanananda was circulated among the Kandhamal district administration and State authorities. A copy of this letter was also sent to Lakshmanananda. On August 22, 2008, Swamiji appealed to the District Magistrate of Kandhamal to enhance his personal security. But surprisingly, police protection was thinned down at his Jaleshpata Ashram. The next morning, local media flashed the news that the life of the Swami was under threat. In the evening, Lakshmanananda was killed along with four of followers during a spiritual discourse.Death of Swami led to serious communal clashes between Hindu and Christian tribals, what is now called as Kandhamal Riots - where christians pretend to be oppressed.

This points to an abysmal administrative failure by the Naveen Patnaik Government to protect a social reformer from the tentacles of terrorism. Till date the Odisha Government has not given any explanation to the serious lapses. But the masterminds of the heinous act are still at large, bringing into doubt the very sincerity of the BJD Government in cracking the case.

It seems the Odisha unit of the RSS and the VHP Odisha together have failed to put pressure on the State Government to bring the perpetrators of the Swami’s murder into justice. The Odisha BJP, which has given the issue a miss, is not even interested.

Swami Lakshmanananda combated fraudulent conversion by Christian missionaries. He was spearheading the Goraksha Andolan. He was working for the socio-economic well-being of the marginalised and indigent in Kandhamal and thereby earned the ire of the missionaries who use charity as a façade for converting people away from their native faith.

Lakshmanananda exemplifies‘Manav sewa is madhav sewa’ (Service to humanity is service to God). “Never have fear of death when you are working for the cause of the motherland.” These were his last words.Swami Lakshmanananda was relentless in his struggle for the cause of tribal welfare for four decades. He crafted a new template for selfless social service. His work will inspire the lives and times for generations to come.
