It a classic case of vote bank politics practiced by Congress, that has come to haunt our country now.
This case dates back to around midnight on 18 February 2007, bombs went off in two carriages on the Samjhauta Express, a twice-weekly train service connecting Delhi with Lahore. The trainers passing by Diwana station near Panipat, and sixty-eight people were killed in the ensuing fire and dozens more were injured. Of the 68 fatalities, most were Pakistani civilians. The victims also included some Indian civilians and three railway policemen. The attack came just a day before Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri was to arrive in New Delhi to resume peace talks with his Indian counterparts. Officials on both sides speculated that the perpetrators intended to disrupt improving relations between the two nations. The needle of suspicion pointed to Pakistani based terror outfits.
However, in a desperate move to win over the minority vote, the Congress party got the investigating agencies to link the bombings to Abhinav Bharat, a so called Hindu fundamentalist group. But United States, conducted a professional investigation into the bombing and concluded that Arif Qasmani, associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba was involved in the attack. Consequently, after consulting with the United Nations, the United States declared him an international terrorist. But, the Indian government wanting to curry favours with the minorities, would have none of it and desperately wanted to link the bombing to a Hindu outfit.
The Congress party influenced the investigating agencies to arrest Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit, an Indian army officer and alleged member of Abhinav Bharat. Purohit himself claimed that he had "infiltrated" the Abhinav Bharat and he was only doing his job. During an army's Court of Inquiry as many as 59 witnesses stated to the court that Purohit was doing his job (of gathering intelligence inputs) by infiltrating extremist organizations. Indian Army Officers have testified that Col Purohit was doing what he was asked to do as a military intelligence man. But the man leading the investigation, Maharashtra ATS Chief Hemant Karkare, was adamant and insisted that it was Col Purohit and not Pakistani terror groups who was behind the Samjautha Express bombings. Recently, in a letter to Prime Minister Modi, Col Purohit alleged that ATS officers led by Karkare inflicted inhuman and despicable torture in custody to make him confess for a crime, which he never did.Till date no case has been filed against Col Purohit, despite the ATS keeping him for over five years in jail.
Now, when India wants Pakistan to keep 26-11 mastermind Lakhvi in jail, Pakistan is asking for Col Purohit to be charged for the Samjhauta bombing. It’s time the Modi government orders a re-investigation into who were behind the conspiracy to cook up a false case and bring a Saffron terror angle, as Sushil Kumar Shinde once grandly announced. We have traitors walking around in our country and its time we identify and haul them into the jails.
