50BC ... The Siddnath Temple is a classic example of early medieval Brahminic architecture. Like all other famous temples in Omkareswar, this temple also is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is located nearby the famous Shri Omkar Mandhata Temple which is also dedicated to the same daity.
The temple is located on a plateau on the Mandhata Island and is supported by a huge podium which is decorated with carvings and frescos. The most eye-catching feature of the temple is a frieze of elephants in various postures carved on over 1.5m high stone slabs at its outer perimeter. The upper portion and the roof of the temple are decorated by elaborate carved figures which showcases artistic magic. The shrine is encircled by verandahs with columns carved in circles, polygons and squares. The main shrine where Lord Shiva houses is in the center and has facades from all the four sides which are adorned with spectacularly stamped figures and decks. The usual timing of the temple is sunrise to sunset.
The Siddhanath Temple was severely damaged by the Mughal invaders, but later on renovated and restored by the Marathas.
