Srirangam
is famous for its Ranganatha Temple. This is one of the largest temples
in India; the temple area itself is spread over a few acres. The
presiding Deity is Sri Ranganatha which was originally worshipped by
Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana. Vibhishana, though born in a family
of demons, happened to be a great devotee of Lord Rama. He was once
carrying the Deity of Ranganatha back to Lanka. Desiring to rest during
his travel he kept the Deity on the ground when he was in Srirangam, The
Deity said that He would reside there and ordered Vibhishana, to build a
temple for Him there. Vibhishana, the great king built the same.
