Lt MM Pillai of Bombay Sappers escaped from a Prisoner of War Camp in Changi, Singapore during WW II in 1942, by hiding and rolling out in a drum and then suitably disguising himself and mingling with the local population. Posing as a merchant, he obtained a passport from the Japanese and made his way to Burma. Working as a cook on a boat he found his way up the Irrawady River and on reaching Northern Burma, he took to the jungle. Alone for three gruesome weeks, sick and starving he finally gained access into the British Lines at Fort White, Burma(Myanamar).
For his remarkable exploits, 2 Lt MM Pillai was awarded the Military Cross (Third Highest Military Decoration )
